Students graduating in Biological and Environmental Engineering have a broad range of career opportunities. Four of the major areas are environmental consulting, business and finance, the health sciences industry, and international development. There is no single career path, and the types of positions that engineers are hired for have broadened substantially. Below is a sampling of recent positions.

  • Frank joined CH2M Hill, a major environmental consulting firm, and is working on hazardous waste site remediation.
  • After graduation, Beth toured Costa Rica for two months, then joined Arthur D. Little to work on sustainable development, which helps American industry prevent environmental.problems before they occur.
  • Henry started his own software company while an undergraduate and became a licensed Microsoft technician. He received 25 job offers from business and computer firms.
  • After graduation, Julie entered medical school at the Mayo Clinic, which only accepts 40 students each year. She received a full scholarship for her medical training and will be specializing in OB/GYN.
  • George became a financial analyst on Wall Street for Elliott Associates, dealing in hedge funds.
  • While an undergraduate, Christopher developed a new technology related to thermochromic inks, which change color with temperature. Upon graduation, he started his own firm to develop and market his products and is now President of his company .
  • Carrie joined Andersen Consulting and has moved up the ranks to become a manager. She is very active in the Andersen recruiting effort on campus.
  • Karen was chosen from more than 1000 applicants to become one of 10 volunteer team members of the WorldTrek Odyssey for Service and Education, in which the 10 travellers interact with schoolchildren over the Web during a two-year world journey.
  • Helen joined Merck Pharmaceuticals as a vaccine production supervisor.
  • Tom entered cooperative extension and is a nutrient management and water quality specialist for the watershed surrounding a municipal water supply.
  • As an undergraduate, Fran worked as a cooperative education student at a Cargill salt plant. After graduation, she was hired as a production engineer at the same plant, and five years later, she is plant manager.
  • Bob is a process manufacturing engineer at International Paper.
  • John first joined a small food company and then became a food engineer at RJR Nabisco.
  • Joyce went on to her M.S. in Environmental Engineering from MIT, then joined the environmental consulting firm Camp-Dresser-McKee, then served in the Peace Corps in Thailand, then worked as a water quality specialist for the EPA, and is now finishing her Ph.D. at Harvard studying appropriate technologies for developing countries.
